Turkey Hunting Vests: 3 Important Tips

Turkey hunting vests come in many different styles from manufacturers such as Mossy Oak, Primos, Dixon, Cabelas, etc. So what do I look for in a turkey hunting vest?

TIP 1: Turkey Hunting Vest Fit

Your turkey hunting vest must be comfortable to wear and shoot in. If your vest does not feel comfortable while seated or you find it difficult to shoulder your turkey gun (shotgun, rifle, etc), that vest is obviously not for you.

A turkey vest should have padded shoulder straps and a wide waist belt to support the gear in your vest and keep it close to your body.

TIP 2: Turkey Vest Pockets

The number of pockets on a vest and their position is critical. You’ll need enough pockets (both large and small) to hold all your essential gear and they must be easy to access. Look for a turkey hunting vest with atleast 12 pockets.

If you are right handed, consider the position of pockets on the vest. Is it easy to get what you need with your right hand? The same applies to left handed persons.

TIP 3: Turkey Vest Seat

Turkey hunting is all about sitting motionless in one position for long periods of time. Its important to use a thick-padded, waterproof cushion or seat with a padded back also.

You could carry an inflatable cushion in your vest, but that means you’d have an extra piece of gear to carry around. Some turkey hunting vests already come with built-in seat and back padding made of waterproof closed foam cell material.
