Decoys are an essential part of any Turkey hunter’s kit.
Choosing the right decoy can make a big difference to your turkey hunting success. Here are 3 tips before buying any turkey decoy.
Tip 1 – Lifelike looking Turkey decoys
Turkeys have excellent eyesight. It therefore makes no sense to buy a decoy that is cheaply presented, lacks realistic features or has a totally incorrect color scheme. Realistic looking turkey decoys with a natural profile and that move in the wind are worth their weight in gold.
One good example of a quality decoy is from FeatherFlex. They make a full-sized, lifelike full-strut Tommy turkey decoy that looks and behaves like the real thing. This decoy is designed to spark an aggressive response from dominant toms. Its lightweight and rugged, yet folds easily to fit in a vest.
Tip 2 – Turkey Decoy size and weight
Do you need to walk some distance to get to your Turkey hunting ground? Or can your ATV easily reach this location? Why is this important? Because depending on how far you need to walk or drive/ride determines the amount of gear, decoys, etc you can carry.
Choose lightweight, folding, compact decoys that easily fit in your pack or vest if you expect to walk a considerable distance. For example, Montana Hen turkey decoys are extremely lightweight and packable, so too is Renzo’s turkey decoys.
If you can haul all your decoys to your turkey hunting spot using an ATV then size, weight and quantity of decoys is not a factor.
Tip 3 – Decoy Construction, Materials
Quality made Turkey decoys should last you many years. Choose decoys that are durable and strong enough to take some abuse without breaking or ripping.
Combinations of rubber and double-thick foam are common materials used in the making of Turkey decoys and for good reason – they stand up to abuse well out in the field or in the back of an ATV.
